Last Relief Grant Funds for Harvey Released

Late in November, the last set of funds from the Hurricane Harvey relief fund were released. Officials released these funds to non-profit organizations. In total, authorities allocated about $114 million in funds to 120 non-profit organizations for Hurricane Harvey relief. It is estimated that these funds helped about 190,000 residents throughout Houston and Harris County. Harvey caused about $125 billion in damages in Texas.

The final amount of funds released totaled $3 million. The money was divided between 17 organizations that will provide comfort items such as furniture, money and other needs to Harvey victims that qualify. Officials picked what organizations would receive these funds by determining which hardest-hit communities still needed assistance.

When Were the Grants Created?

The grant was created in 2017 by Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner and Harris County Judge Ed Emmett. The Houston Community foundation has controlled the funds. They were intended to aid residents throughout the recovery process. This final round of funding was dispersed in a way that helps to guarantee maximum impact. Specifically, the funds were given to some of the hardest hit areas that are still struggling to recover.

Funds for Rebuilding

One of the organizations that received this funding is the Home Preservation Fund. This fund will help economically-disadvantaged families rebuild their homes. It focuses on helping homeowners who were not able to finish repairs to their houses because of missed mortgage payments.

In a statement about the funds, Judge Emmett said, “The effects of Harvey will be felt for years to come. These local nonprofit grantees have strong track records of supporting our communities. We’re confident that they can make a real difference in the longer term.” Communities are still struggling. Earlier this year, we reported that damage from Hurricane Harvey still needs about $2 billion in additional funding.
